Your toothbrush is a handy tool that can help you scrub and clean your smile every morning and every night—even more often if you desire. However, it will only perform a top-notch cleaning job if it’s in good condition. This is why it’s important to take good care of your toothbrush. To help you do so, our Barras Family Dentistry dental team encourages you to do the following things:
No. 1: Clean your hands
Unfortunately, your hands usually have high amounts of germs on them. This is why it’s important to wash your hands before you reach for your toothbrush. If you do so, the germs from your hands won’t transfer onto your toothbrush.
No. 2: Give your brush space
Try to give your toothbrush the space it needs by keeping it away from other toothbrushes. This is important because if your toothbrush bristles touch another toothbrush’s bristles, then the germs from one brush can move on over to the other.
No. 3: Let your brush dry
Remember to only brush with dry bristles. Also, if you have a toothbrush cover, make sure the bristles are dry before you place the cover over your brush. This is because wet bristles can create a moist environment and promote bacteria growth.
No. 4: Don’t share
No matter how tempting it might be, don’t share your toothbrush with anyone—not even your family members. If you share your brush, the germs from your friend or family member’s mouth can swarm your toothbrush, later jumping to your mouth once you use it. To make things easier, try to keep a new brush stashed in your bathroom drawer for anyone who needs it.
Now, even if you do these four things, you’ll still need to exchange your toothbrush with a new one after you’ve used it for 3-4 months or when the bristles have frayed. It’s also important to throw out your brush after you have been sick.
